Refined Confidence: A British Take on the Audi S5 Avant
5 June 2025Pairing the S5 badge with the Avant nameplate might feel unusual at first glance, but rest assured—this is no error. In response to feedback from customers and dealers, Audi has recently returned to its more familiar naming conventions. The result? A broader line-up within the A5 family, including this elegant long-roofed estate—territory where Audi has long felt at home.
Having already attended the local unveiling of the S5 Avant, I was fortunate enough to spend a week behind the wheel, and it quickly became clear that Audi is once again leaning into its hallmark understated elegance. While the A5 is offered in a variety of body styles, Audi’s decision to launch the S5 in New Zealand solely as an Avant is a bold and confident one. In a market where estate cars are still cherished—and SUVs haven’t completely taken over—it’s a strategic choice. And for those with a discerning eye, this S5 subtly stands apart.
There’s an unmistakable nod to the legendary Nogaro Blue RS2 in the model’s visual identity. It’s restrained yet striking, with clean lines and a quietly athletic presence. The flush-fitting door handles are a tactile delight, deploying effortlessly at the lightest touch. The vivid blue finish of our test vehicle served as a timely reminder: Audi’s paint palette is exceptional. Resist the urge to opt for the usual silver or black—this brand rewards a bolder choice.
At the rear, the S5’s dynamic light signature is a true highlight. Audi has long mastered the art of lighting, and this car is no exception. The animated rear lights dance and shimmer with crystal-like precision, offering a selection of eight distinct patterns. It’s all very slick and controlled. Additional lighting features include subtle puddle lights at the base of the doors and an illuminated indicator for the hands-free tailgate. There’s only a single S-badge on the exterior—a quiet mark of confidence.
Step inside, and the interior continues the theme of elegant restraint. The front seats are a triumph: beautifully finished in stitched leather, and offering massage, heating and ventilation. Designed for long-distance touring, they’re plush without being overstuffed, and supremely supportive. Space in the front is generous, though taller passengers in the rear may find legroom a bit tight. The boot, however, is vast—especially with the split-folding rear seats down—and features include an electrically retractable towbar.
The dashboard, finished in a blend of ultrasuede, leather, and carbon-look trim, sticks to Audi’s classic black-on-black scheme. It’s sturdy and tastefully executed, though arguably lacking in cheer. The materials are premium and well put together, but a little more contrast might have added warmth.
Not all is perfect. The touch-sensitive gloss-black controls on the driver’s door look modern, but are easy to activate unintentionally. Likewise, the centre console’s shiny black surface quickly picks up fingerprints and scratches, detracting from an otherwise thoughtful design. Storage solutions are modest: a shallow space under the armrest, twin cupholders, and a wireless charging pad.
Audi’s reputation for in-car technology is well deserved, but in the S5 Avant, it feels like innovation has slightly stalled. The Virtual Cockpit remains sharp and intuitive, yet it doesn’t offer the variety or flair found in newer models such as the RS3. Switching between driving modes is functional rather than immersive, with the display merely changing text from “Comfort” to “Dynamic” or “Efficiency.” It does the job, but misses an opportunity to elevate the experience.
The central infotainment screen, however, performs admirably. Bright, responsive, and equipped with wireless smartphone projection, it includes useful shortcuts that remain accessible at all times. Yet the optional passenger display feels more gimmick than gain. If you’re already mirroring your phone, the added screen adds little to the experience—and the dashboard might look better without it.
All in all, the Audi S5 Avant presents a compelling blend of maturity, power, and functionality. It may not shout for attention, but those who appreciate subtlety and substance will find plenty to admire. It’s a refined expression of performance—calm, confident, and unmistakably Audi.
